Snow Falls in Egypt's Sharqia Governorate
Snow has fallen in several areas of the Sharqia Governorate in northeastern Egypt on Sunday night, as reported by the local Ad Dustour newspaper. According to the publication, a thin layer of wet snow covered roads and building rooftops in the locality.
The newspaper has published photos of residents from the 10th Ramadan City, showing that almost all streets and squares in the city are coated with snow, while highways are covered in ice.
Authorities in Cairo have declared a state of emergency for the city’s road and municipal services following heavy rains. Governor Khaled Abdel Aal has ordered all employees of the housing and utilities system to work around the clock, maintaining continuous communication with the meteorological department and having emergency crews on standby.
Many streets in Cairo are closed due to water accumulations, tunnels are temporarily shut down, and transportation is restricted through bridges over the Nile River.
These measures have been initiated following a dramatic drop in temperatures in central and northern Egypt and the assault of a powerful thunderstorm front from the Mediterranean. Nighttime temperatures are dropping by at least 10 degrees, which is especially concerning given the lack of central heating in most residential buildings in both Cairo and other governorates.
Meteorologists forecast that the cold and rainy weather will persist for several more days.
