Over 600 Heavy Trucks Accumulated on the Russian Side of Upper Lars
Due to traffic restrictions on a section of the Military Highway (the route connecting Vladikavkaz and Tbilisi through the Caucasus mountain range), several hundred heavy trucks have accumulated at the Upper Lars checkpoint in North Ossetia, reported Irbek Tomayev, the Deputy Prime Minister of North Ossetia. This information was provided to Armenpress by the Interfax news agency.
“The number of heavy trucks waiting to pass through the multipurpose automobile checkpoint at Upper Lars is 615. During the holiday weekend, 24,680 vehicles and 65,840 people crossed the state border in both directions at the checkpoint,” said Tomayev during a government staff meeting.
He added that currently, traffic is closed for heavy trucks on the section of the Military Highway. According to the North Ossetian Ministry of Emergency Situations, restrictions on heavy truck traffic from Vladikavkaz to Lars along the Military Highway have been in place since January 8 due to worsening weather conditions in Georgia and will remain until further notice.
The Military Highway is currently the only land route connecting not only Georgia but also Armenia with Russia.
