Amazon to Cut More Than 18,000 Employees
Amazon will cut more than 18,000 employees, as announced by the company's CEO Andy Jassy in a statement posted on the Amazon website on Wednesday. This figure is significantly higher than the previously announced 10,000 positions.
In November of last year, it was reported that Amazon's management planned to eliminate 10,000 jobs. Jassy explained that the decision was made as part of planning for 2023, citing "uncertainty in the economy and the hiring of a large number of employees over the past two years." He also noted that management had warned employees at the time that additional cuts could not be ruled out.
As a result of the review, Amazon's leadership made the difficult decision to eliminate several positions. According to Jassy, over 18,000 positions will be cut, primarily from the sales and recruiting departments.
During the last two years, Amazon's workforce nearly doubled due to increased demand for online services as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, as sanitary restrictions were lifted, the growth of the company's revenues slowed down.
According to The Wall Street Journal, as of September 2022, Amazon employed about 1.5 million people.
