Accounts of Russians Blocked in Georgia
The Georgian Bank of Georgia has sent notifications to its customers who hold Russian citizenship regarding the closure of their accounts without providing explanations for the reasons behind this action. This has been confirmed by customers of the bank whose accounts have been blocked.
In the bank’s message sent to clients, it is stated: “We inform you that your account will be closed in two specific cases, according to the bank's decision and internal regulations, within five business days.”
Blogger Nikolai Levshits wrote on his Telegram channel that there are already over a hundred such cases. According to him, accounts have been closed not only for recently arrived residents but also for those who have lived in Georgia for years. “Many were not using Swift or cryptocurrency, and the cards were necessary for everyday purposes,” he added.
A representative of the Georgian bank confirmed the account closures in an interview with Kommersant, adding that the changes concern a certain category of clients, “regardless of their citizenship.” The bank declined to explain the reason or specify the criteria by which accounts were blocked.
