Temporary Ban on the Export of Carp Fry from the Republic of Armenia

Temporary Ban on the Export of Carp Fry from the Republic of Armenia

The government has adopted a decision on the "Temporary Ban on the Export of Carp Fry from the Republic of Armenia." According to the justification, the regulation of commercial fishing for carp in Lake Sevan has led to a noticeable increase in the biomass of carp in the lake over recent years (2,668 tons in 2019, 2,345 tons in 2020, and 5,348 tons in 2021). This increase allows for limited commercial fishing operations in Lake Sevan (300 tons in 2020, 300 tons in 2021, and 600 tons in 2022).

However, the trend of increasing carp biomass in recent years does not yet ensure the normal growth of this wild fish species and its optimal population in the lake. Accordingly, it is proposed to impose a six-month ban on the export of carp fry classified under the appropriate tariff codes originating from Armenia. This measure aims to improve the ecological balance of Lake Sevan, preserve the biodiversity of the lake and its watershed ecosystems, ensure the sustainable use of biological resources, and maintain the stable biomass of carp for future commercial fishing.
