Why Hambardzum Matevosyan Was Dismissed

The newspaper "Joghouvurd" reports that following the election of the rector of Brusov Public University, two resignations occurred in the government cabinet. First, Minister of Education, Science, Culture, and Sports Vahram Dumanyan, followed by Deputy Prime Minister Hambardzum Matevosyan, announced that they had submitted their resignation letters.

ArmLur.am reported yesterday that the resignation of both the minister and the deputy prime minister (the latter also being the chairman of the university's Board of Trustees) is directly related to the re-election of Rector Karine Harutyunyan, as the ruling political team and Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan had instructed to support the desired candidate, David Gyurjinyan, the head of the Language Committee.

According to the news outlet, during the rector elections, Deputy Prime Minister Matevosyan ensured strict loyalty. He continuously emphasized the need for fair and impartial elections, creating the impression that he was unaligned with any particular faction.

“The voting by board member and Deputy Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports Zhanna Andreasyan is quite interesting. It was, of course, secret, and no one can confirm how and for whom the Deputy Minister voted, but it cannot be ruled out that Andreasyan might have voted in favor of Harutyunyan’s candidacy to weave political intrigues within the government and finally occupy the ministerial position herself. Obviously, she is the only one who knows how she voted, but this scenario cannot be dismissed, as internal discussions at the university suggested that the votes would be evenly split, 10/10, leading to a deadlock. However, in fact, Harutyunyan was re-elected with a 12/8 vote,” said a source close to the situation cited by the newspaper.
