Corruption Scandal Surrounding 2022 World Cup: EU Parliament Member and Other Officials Arrested
In connection with a corruption case surrounding the 2022 World Cup, €1.58 million was seized from a member of the European Parliament. This was reported by Говорит Москва.
Members of the European Parliament today voted in favor of dismissing a representative from the socialist group. The former Greek television presenter, who headed the European Parliament's delegation for relations with the Arab Gulf, was arrested on December 9.
Former European Parliament member Pier Antonio Panzeri and Luca Visentini, head of the International Trade Union Confederation, were also detained. Police discovered over €600,000 in cash at their homes.
According to prosecutors, the defendants in the case acted in the interests of Qatar, aiming to improve the country’s image while preparing for the World Cup.
