Conditions for Russian Participation in the 2024 Olympic Games Revealed
The US Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) advocates for the participation of Russian athletes in the Olympic Games scheduled for Paris in 2024. This was announced by USOPC Chair Susanne Lyons, as reported by RIA Novosti.
On December 9, an Olympic summit was held in Lausanne, Switzerland. The concluding declaration discussed the initiative to universally support the review of protective measures, which includes not allowing Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete. It was also stated that sanctions against Russia and Belarus must remain in effect, which entail, among other things, that athletes compete without their national flags and anthems. The ban on hosting competitions remains in effect as well.
“It may be unpleasant to admit, but preventing Russian participation casts a shadow over us. Their return is truly important for the Olympic movement. At the same time, we continue to support the Ukrainian people and Ukrainian athletes. The U.S. welcomes the search for opportunities for those athletes who have trained their entire lives to return to competition, but we are firmly opposed to them returning under their national flag while their countries are under sanctions,” Lyons’ words are quoted by The Wall Street Journal.
