Stepanakert Responds to Baku
The Environment Committee of the Republic of Artsakh has issued a statement in response to Azerbaijani manipulations regarding subsoil and environmental issues.
“The principles and regulations for the use of subsoil in Artsakh, as well as the relationships related to subsoil use, are defined by the Subsoil Code of the Republic of Artsakh. The Environment Committee of Artsakh, as a state authorized body, properly monitors the activities of companies utilizing subsoil. It is important to emphasize that the subsoil of the Republic of Artsakh is the exclusive property of the state, which is used in accordance with advanced standards of international environmental and social responsibility. Within this framework, the Republic of Artsakh takes care of the health of its population and the preservation of nature, despite various difficulties caused by non-recognition and conflict.
Our periodic studies, involving international-level experts, have not recorded any significant environmental risks associated with subsoil use, while taking necessary preventive measures when required. As for the relevant statement issued by Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, we are confident that the results of any studies conducted within the framework of Artsakh’s legislation will confirm compliance with environmental standards. Moreover, the Republic of Artsakh is even prepared to invite an international expert group to further assess environmental risks and improve the system.”
On December 3, a group of Azerbaijanis in civilian clothes had blocked the Stepanakert-Goris highway at the Shushi-Karin Tak intersection under fabricated environmental reasons. After negotiations lasting more than three hours, the Azerbaijani side had opened the highway.
