Azerbaijani MPs Propose Changing the Country's Name: What is the Reason Behind This?
Recently, the President of Azerbaijan condemned Iran's hostile policy towards Azerbaijan. Following this, Iran's ambassador to Azerbaijan placed a figure of an iron fist on the Iranian flag and shared this photo on social media. This was stated by MP Gudrat Hasanguliyev at today's session of the Milli Mejlis in Azerbaijan, as reported by Minval.az.
He emphasized that steps towards state-building in Azerbaijan make it necessary to adopt a new Constitution.
“The first step should be changing the name of Azerbaijan. The country should be called Northern Azerbaijan. Also, as in the case of other divided peoples, the words ‘north’ and ‘south’ are present in the definitions. I believe this would also serve as a stimulus for Southern Azerbaijanis,” he noted.
It is worth recalling that days ago, Aliyev stated that he had worked with three previous presidents—Khatami, Ahmadinejad, and Rouhani—but had never faced such a situation.
“Iran has never conducted military exercises near our borders twice within a few months. There have never been statements filled with so much hatred and threats directed at Azerbaijan. We have always responded and will respond to any anti-Azerbaijani actions, whether they are statements or actions. Therefore, we were compelled to start exercises near the border with Iran to demonstrate that we are not afraid of them. We will do everything to protect our way of life, the development of Azerbaijan and Azerbaijanis, including those Azerbaijanis living in Iran. They are part of our nation,” Aliyev stated.
