Woman Arrested for Supporting Husband Accused of State Betrayal

The Court of Appeals has approved the prosecutor's appeal on November 21, 2022, overturning the decision of the first instance court in Yerevan that had deemed the release on bail of A.P., who is accused of assisting state betrayal, inadmissible.

This information was reported by the Prosecutor General's Office of Armenia, reminding that during the criminal proceedings initiated by the National Security Service, evidence was obtained that A.P., being a citizen of Armenia, assisted her husband in committing state betrayal.

Specifically, in 2021, at her husband's request, A.P. clarified the location address of one of the units of the Armenian Armed Forces through relatives and, for a certain sum of money, communicated it to her husband with the intention of passing it on to representatives of foreign intelligence. The latter conveyed the information to foreign special services.

On April 29, 2022, the criminal case was submitted to the court with an approved indictment. On October 11, 2022, the General Jurisdiction Court of Yerevan, considering the lawyer’s application regarding A.P., changed the selected measure from detention to a non-custodial preventive measure.

The prosecutor representing the charges filed a special review appeal against this court act, which the Court of Appeals satisfied on November 21, 2022.

The court, in particular, took into account the nature of the alleged offense, its public danger, as well as the factual data established during the criminal proceedings, which provide grounds to assume that the accused could exert illegal influence on participants in the criminal proceedings. In this context, even the payment of bail could not negate the likelihood of her unlawful behavior.

The Court of Appeals' decision has been sent to the Gegharkunik Regional Department of Police for execution.
