As reported, mass protests are taking place in cities across China against the country's 'zero tolerance' policy towards the coronavirus, according to the radio station 'Svoboda'. The Chinese authorities have announced strict lockdowns in areas where infected individuals are present.

The protests started after ten people died in a fire in the city of Urumqi; they were unable to escape their apartments due to the lockdown in place during the incident. The protests, which began in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, whose capital is Urumqi, have spread to many major cities and universities in China.

Initially, the protesters demanded the lifting of lockdowns. Now in Shanghai, demonstrators are chanting slogans calling for the resignation of Chinese President Xi Jinping and the complete removal of the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party. The police are dispersing the gatherings and making arrests.
