US to Impose Sanctions on Iran for Mass Arrests of Protesters
The US authorities are concerned about the mass arrests of individuals protesting for women's rights in Iran, stated Jake Sullivan, National Security Advisor to the President of the United States, as reported by TASS.
According to him, Washington suspects Tehran of depriving the citizens of the Republic of their "fundamental freedoms."
“I am deeply concerned about reports from Iran regarding the mass arrests of protesters who are making legitimate demands against a government that systematically deprives its people of fundamental freedoms, and one of them has now been sentenced to death,” Sullivan said.
As the presidential advisor noted, under such circumstances, Washington will continue to exert pressure on representatives of the Iranian leadership involved in the "abuses" against protesters in collaboration with its allies. Sullivan also emphasized that the White House will implement not only restrictive measures but also other actions to "hold the responsible parties accountable."
Earlier, it was reported that Iran's Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian told UN Secretary-General António Guterres about the support for protests in the country from a number of Western states.
