Details on Biden-Xi Jinping Negotiations
U.S. President Joe Biden described his negotiations with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the G20 summit as "open and candid."
“We just had an open and candid discussion,” Biden told reporters following his talks with Xi in Indonesia during the G20 summit. He stated that he informed the Chinese leader that the U.S. would defend its interests. “We will compete vigorously, but I am not looking for conflict,” Biden added.
According to the White House press office, the leaders of the two countries also discussed the situation surrounding Taiwan. In this context, the U.S. President assured the Chinese leader that Washington's policy towards the island has not changed.
Chinese President Xi Jinping, during his meeting with U.S. President Joe Biden, referred to the Taiwan issue as a "red line" in U.S.-China relations, which cannot be crossed, as stated in a report by China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. “The Taiwan issue is at the core of China's fundamental interests, the political foundation of China-U.S. relations, and the first red line that must not be crossed,” Xi stressed.
