Head of Border Patrol to Be Fired Due to Migrant Influx in the US

The Biden administration has demanded the resignation of Chris Magnus, the head of Customs and Border Protection, due to an influx of migrants at the southern border. This was reported on Friday by the Associated Press, citing sources familiar with the situation.

Magnus has been presented with two options: either he resigns on his own in the coming days or he will be removed from his position. He has held this role for less than a year.

During the last fiscal year, which ended on September 30, US officials arrested nearly 2.4 million illegal migrants at the border with Mexico. This figure was 1.96 million a year ago and just 646,800 in 2020. Republicans argue that this is only part of the migrants leaving the US, noting that many have managed to cross the border undetected.

The Biden administration's failure to address the migrant issue has become a major area of criticism from Republicans ahead of the midterm elections. Success in combating illegal immigration is necessary for Biden to strengthen his position as he prepares for the 2024 presidential election.
