Japan's Self-Defense Forces and the U.S. military commenced major joint exercises named 'Sharp Sword' on Thursday, aimed at conducting operations to defend the Japanese archipelago's islands in the East China Sea.

This information was reported by Kyodo news agency, citing Japan's Ministry of Defense.

The purpose of the exercises is to enhance the allied forces' 'deterrence and response capabilities.'

Approximately 20 and 10 ships, as well as around 250 and 120 aircraft from Japan and the U.S., respectively, will be involved, along with four military vessels and two aircraft from Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom.

The exercises will continue until November 19.
