South Korean President Apologizes for Seoul Crowd Surge
South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol has apologized to his fellow citizens for the crowd surge that occurred in downtown Seoul, resulting in the deaths of at least 156 people, as reported by Yonhap.
“I don’t dare to compare myself to the parents who lost their children, but as president, who must protect the lives of citizens and ensure their safety, I am sorry and I apologize to the families of the victims who are living in indescribable tragedy, and to the country that shares this pain and sorrow,” the president said during a meeting with the prime minister and ministers.
The authorities have discussed measures to ensure safety during mass gatherings.
According to Yonhap, this statement can be regarded as Yoon Suk-yeol's first official apology to the country for the tragedy, despite the fact that he had previously apologized during religious ceremonies at a Buddhist temple and a Christian church.
