The investigation is being conducted regarding the 4th President of Armenia, Armen Sarkissian, related to his foreign citizenship. This was reported by the National Security Service of Armenia in response to a query from Sputnik Armenia.
"In the framework of criminal case number 61202621, relevant investigative and other procedural actions are being carried out in the investigative department of the National Security Service," the statement reads.
The NSS has declined to provide further information regarding this criminal case, citing that such data is not subject to publication.
On January 25, the Office of the Prosecutor General of Armenia notified Sputnik Armenia that the NSS would verify whether Armen Sarkissian had held citizenship of Saint Kitts and Nevis at the time of being elected as President of the Republic.
Former President Armen Sarkissian resigned on January 23, 2022, stating that the president does not have the necessary tools to influence domestic and foreign political processes during the current difficult times for the country and the nation.
The next day, Hetq.am reported that Sarkissian had held citizenship of Saint Kitts and Nevis before being elected as president, which would mean he was not eligible for that position.
