Taxi Stands to be Marked in Yellow: Details

Taxi stands on Yerevan streets will be painted not in red but in yellow. This proposal from the Yerevan City Hall received approval from the Armenian government today.

The justification for the draft decision published on the government's website indicates that experiences from previous years, along with numerous complaints, dissatisfaction, and alarm signals from citizens, demonstrate that the red ground marking is not sufficiently visible and understandable to road users.

Additionally, the city hall had suggested that new markings be made before uncontrolled intersections to enhance drivers' vigilance and the safety of pedestrians passing through those areas. However, the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructures did not accept this regulation and removed it from the draft prior to its submission to the government.

The ministry stated in its objection that there are noise-producing markings installed before uncontrolled pedestrian crossings in Yerevan, which are specifically aimed at increasing drivers' attention, therefore, there is no need for new markings.

Instead, the ministry has proposed that the city authorities consider the feasibility of implementing more modern systems. For instance, a sensor system that alerts about the presence of a pedestrian at an uncontrolled crossing.

“A sensitive element is installed near the uncontrolled pedestrian crossing that records the presence of a pedestrian. A yellow blinking traffic light is connected above the pedestrian crossing marking, which informs the driver about the presence of a pedestrian on the crossing,” suggested the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructures.

It remains unclear how feasible the ministry's proposal will be in the capital. Meanwhile, the new yellow markings for taxi stands could appear in Yerevan in about 10 days, when the government's decision accepted today comes into effect.
