“The EU Has Its Interests Here”: Klaar on the Armenia-Azerbaijan Conflict

The European Union is actively engaged at all levels of the peace process between Armenia and Azerbaijan. This was stated by Toivo Klaar, the EU's special representative for the South Caucasus and the crisis in Georgia, in an interview with Voice of America.

According to him, the involvement of the EU is evidenced by the activities of European Council President Charles Michel, who has held four meetings in Brussels between the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan, as well as the EU's own efforts in this direction. Another indication of the EU's activity in the region, according to Klaar, is the deployment of a monitoring mission in Armenia along the border with Azerbaijan.

“The EU has its interests here. This is our neighboring region, so we have a clear interest in a peaceful and prosperous South Caucasus. It is important that we can resolve the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan,” he noted.

Klaar expects that the monitoring mission will provide better information to Brussels about the situation on the ground and the existing challenges, which could help contribute more effectively to the peace process.
