Let's Solve the Issue by Referendum: Erdogan on Muslim Women's Headscarf Controversy
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan addressed the issue of the headscarf for Muslim women, known as hijab, today in Malatya. He proposed to hold a referendum to enshrine the right to wear the hijab in the constitution.
"This is the first time I am speaking about this. Let's solve the issue by referendum; we will send the proposal for amendment to parliament," said Erdogan.
The decision to hold a referendum in Turkey is made by the parliament, the Grand National Assembly. The decision is confirmed if a constitutional majority is secured, requiring at least 330 votes in the 600-member legislative body.
