We Will Not Allow Equality to Be Established. Marukyan Responds to Klaar

The Armenian forces have never committed war crimes, and there can’t even be a basis for comparison with the actions of the Azerbaijani forces. This was emphasized by Armenia’s special envoy Edmon Marukyan in response to the recent remarks made by Toivo Klaar, the EU's special representative for the South Caucasus and the crisis in Georgia, on Twitter.

Klaar specifically stated that he received several videos regarding war crimes committed against Azerbaijan. He noted that these require verification and investigation, and that the real perpetrators should also be held accountable, while mentioning that the conflict has clearly left deep wounds on both sides.

“It is clear, isn’t it, what is happening? When incontrovertible evidence of war crimes committed by Azerbaijan emerges, Azerbaijan quickly presents supposed acts of war crimes by Armenia during the 2020 44-day war to counter it. After that, an equality sign is hastily placed between victim and perpetrator (as if both sides acted the same),” emphasized Marukyan.

He pointed out that trying to compare any incidents that occurred during full-scale war with evident war crimes committed during the discussion of the peace treaty text makes no logical sense at all.

“I am confident that the Armenian forces have never committed such war crimes, and there can’t even be a basis for comparison with all that we saw in this horrendous video. We will not allow an equality sign to be placed between the victim of a war crime and the perpetrator,” concluded the special envoy.
