Prosecutor in March 1 Case Dismissed from Position

The newspaper "Zhoghvorud" reports that dismissals within the Office of the Prosecutor General of Armenia have reached prosecutors involved in the March 1 case.

Yesterday, the head of the Department for Crimes Against State Authority at the Prosecutor General's Office, Third Class State Counselor Vaghinak Janazyan, submitted a resignation request. The newly appointed Prosecutor General Anna Vardapetyan signed the order to dismiss Vaghinak Janazyan from his position effective October 3.

Janazyan is not a newcomer to the system. He has previously served as the deputy head of the Investigation Committee's Main Department for Particularly Important Cases, then as a senior prosecutor, and as the prosecutor of Yerevan’s Central and Norq-Marsash administrative districts. Since 2021, he has been the head of the Department for Crimes Against State Authority.

However, his name is also known for other reasons. Back in 2011, the former head of the Special Investigative Service Andranik Mirzoyan decided to reassign the former head of the investigative group for the March 1 case, Vahagn Harutyunyan, to another position and handed over the responsibilities of leading the investigative group for the March 1 case to Vaghinak Janazyan, a senior investigator for particularly important cases. Janazyan accepted the case, which was being investigated at that time.

The March 1 case remains unresolved to this day, with the killings of citizens shot in the streets still not having been clarified.
