Armenia and Azerbaijan Discuss 5 Agenda Items: Grigoryan on Meeting with Hajiyev

Armenia's Security Council Secretary Armen Grigoryan has assessed the meeting with Hikmet Hajiyev, the assistant to the President of Azerbaijan, as effective. The meeting was organized by Jake Sullivan, the U.S. National Security Advisor. Grigoryan referred to Sullivan's remarks after the meeting, stating that specific steps were discussed that could lead to peace.

“We discussed the agenda for the resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, as well as themes related to the establishment of peace in the region. These topics include unblocking, delimitation, and border security, as well as other issues that bring peace and stability to the region. These are the main topics we have discussed. There was also an emphasis on the elimination of the consequences of the recent large-scale aggression. You know that in this regard, the United States has repeatedly stated that Azerbaijan must withdraw its troops to the points from which it launched aggression,” Grigoryan said in an interview with Voice of America.

Grigoryan stated that Armenia and Azerbaijan are discussing 5 agenda items that are interconnected.

“One of them is humanitarian issues, meaning the return of prisoners and all existing humanitarian matters. There is also the issue of unblocking, delimitation, and demarcation, the resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh issue, and the peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan. We have tried to clarify how we will move forward on these directions. These are interconnected. In other words, the specificity has been around these topics regarding how we progress,” Grigoryan emphasized.

According to him, there are various formats where discussions take place at different levels. “These include discussions at the level of foreign ministers, deputy prime ministers, as well as the directors of national security services. There are also high-level discussions, meaning meetings between the Prime Minister of Armenia and the President of Azerbaijan. We are currently discussing how to make progress in other formats to possibly have a high-level meeting,” Grigoryan elaborated.
