New Project on Military Service for Foreigners Who Obtained Russian Citizenship

The Civil Society Development and Human Rights Council of the President of the Russian Federation (CSDHRC) is preparing proposals regarding compulsory military service for foreigners who have obtained Russian citizenship for less than 10 years. This was reported by council member Kirill Kabánov on his Telegram channel.

“Within the framework of the partial mobilization announced by the President of the Russian Federation, we are preparing proposals for new citizens of Russia, who have had Russian citizenship for less than 10 years, to undergo mandatory military service within a year, specifically for those coming from Central Asian countries such as Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. Refusing to fulfill military service should result in the deprivation of Russian citizenship not only for the conscript but also for their family members,” he wrote.

According to Kabánov, the implementation of this initiative will be a “proportional response” to the official prohibitions imposed by the authorities of the aforementioned countries on the voluntary participation of their citizens in military service, which could lead to criminal punishments in their home countries.

Kabánov stated that the proposals would be prepared by the Human Rights Council within a week. “They will be sent to the Security Council of the Russian Federation, the State Duma, and the Presidential Administration. We are an advisory body to the President and are preparing our proposals primarily for the President. They will be ready by next week,” he emphasized.
