Iran Restricts Internet Access Amid Ongoing Protests

Iran has restricted access to Instagram and WhatsApp social media networks in response to protests against the death of a 22-year-old Kurdish woman, Mahsa Amini, who was detained by the morality police and later died in custody, local residents and internet watchdog NetBlocks reported.

The country has also experienced significant internet disruptions, with one of the largest mobile operators going offline, leaving millions of Iranians without connectivity.

Amini's death, following her arrest for allegedly violating the country's dress code, has sparked outrage and raised questions about freedom in the Islamic Republic and an economy drowning in sanctions.

According to Iranian media and officials, at least six protesters, as well as one police officer and a member of a pro-government militia, have been killed. However, some activists claim the death toll is higher.

NetBlocks also reported a "total loss of connectivity" with Iran's main mobile operator and another provider.
