Today is the Independence Day of the Republic of Armenia
September 21 is the Independence Day of Armenia. Our republic is already 31 years old. On this very day in 1991, a referendum was held, in which more than 95 percent of the Armenian population participated. Over 99 percent of the participants in the referendum voted 'Yes' for independence, answering the question, 'Do you agree that Armenia should be an independent, democratic state outside the USSR?'
Two days later, based on the results of the referendum, the Supreme Council of Armenia declared the Republic of Armenia an independent state. After declaring independence, it was necessary to establish and defend it. The declaration was followed by a recognition process, and on March 2, 1992, our country became a full member of the United Nations, while we had to defend our independence and statehood during a forced war, paying with the blood of brave Armenian soldiers.
