What the Opposition Discussed with Pelosi During Meeting: "Hraparak"

The newspaper "Hraparak" reports that U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and members of Congress held a closed meeting on Sunday with two opposition factions of the Armenian National Assembly. Participants included Haik Mamijanyan, Taguhi Tovmasyan, Seyran Ohanyan, Ishkhan Saghatelyan, Anna Grigoryan, and Vahe Hakobyan. We have learned some details about the meeting.

On all important issues, the Congress members provided vague answers, such as regarding the right to self-determination for Artsakh and what actions the U.S. could take to remove Azerbaijanis from Armenian sovereign territory. When Congress members explained why they support the current authorities, claiming they are defending the democracy established in Armenia since 2018, the opposition members first expressed their disbelief by questioning where this democracy is, as they do not see it, and proceeded to list the pressures and repressions carried out by the ruling party against opposition members, disobedient local government leaders, journalists, and others.

The Congress members were surprised to listen to the opposition and promised to make clarifications regarding these issues.

The parliamentarians inquired about news regarding support, both programmatic and political. The Congress members responded that first, Armenia should clarify what kind of support they expect from them. There were no clear answers provided regarding the opposition's demands that mere condemnatory statements are insufficient and that sanctions should also be applied against Azerbaijan. They stated that upon returning to the U.S., they would discuss all these issues in more detail.
