The Number of Casualties and Missing Persons from Azerbaijan's Latest Aggression Revealed

On September 19, a meeting of the Armenian Security Council took place, led by Prime Minister N. Pashinyan, during which the following statement was adopted: “On the night of September 12-13, 2022, the armed forces of Azerbaijan launched a large-scale aggression against the sovereign territory of the Republic of Armenia, utilizing heavy weaponry, artillery, missile systems, and unmanned aerial vehicles.

The number of casualties and missing persons has reached 207, including 3 civilians who were killed, 2 civilians whose whereabouts are considered unknown, and 293 soldiers and 3 civilians who were injured. A total of 20 soldiers have been captured. There are reports of Armenian captives being tortured, mutilated, and illegally deprived of life by Azerbaijan’s military forces.

Azerbaijan’s armed forces targeted 36 settlements, including Goris, Sisian, Kapan, Jermuk, Vardenis, Tegh, and Geghamasar communities, resulting in partial or complete destruction of 192 houses, 3 hotels, 2 schools, 1 medical institution, 1 event hall, and 4 animal shelters. Damage was inflicted on 7 electric infrastructure units, 5 water infrastructures, 3 gas pipelines, 1 bridge, 2 highways, and 1 street. Two ambulances and 4 privately-owned vehicles were also targeted.

Azerbaijani troops have penetrated the sovereign territory of the Republic of Armenia in several directions. Due to the fierce and heroic resistance of the Armenian Armed Forces and the engagement of the international community, the Azerbaijani attack has been halted, but the military-political situation remains tense.

Azerbaijan’s aggressive policy aims to disrupt efforts to establish peace in the region, open regional communications, and comprehensively resolve the Nagorno-Karabakh issue, by imposing military solutions on the Republic of Armenia. The Republic of Armenia, having adopted an agenda for establishing peace and opening regional communications, deems Azerbaijan's policy of threats and coercion unacceptable.

The Security Council declares that the Republic of Armenia will defend its independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity by all means available to it. Azerbaijani forces must withdraw from occupied territories of the Republic of Armenia.

We call on the international community to exert continuous pressure on Azerbaijan to end the occupation of the territories of the Republic of Armenia and to withdraw its troops, and we welcome all countries and organizations that have taken a clear position in this regard. At the same time, we reaffirm our commitment as a responsible member of the international community to uphold the obligations of the Republic of Armenia.
