Don't Let Armenia Stand Alone: Greek City Times on the Dangerous Turkish-Azerbaijani Tandem

It has long been clear that Turkey aims to create an intermediate, free, yet distinct geosystem in Central Asia that will operate autonomously, taking advantage of the competition between the Euro-Atlantic West and the impending collectivization of Eurasian states, relying on the Russia-China framework. What is happening in Armenia is directly linked to Ankara’s objectives, writes Konstantinos Grivas, a professor of geopolitics and modern military technologies, in an article published by Greek City Times, as reported by Tert.am.

Turkey is de facto the leader in this scheme, which primarily consists of Turkic-speaking countries. “The axis of this free association in Central and South Asia is the Turkey-Azerbaijan system. And the thorn in their side is Armenia. Therefore, Armenia must be dismantled by Turkey and Azerbaijan. A victory against Armenia and the resulting geopolitical distortion and satellite-ization will further solidify the unity of the Turkish-Azerbaijani scheme. In addition, by neutralizing Armenia geopolitically, Azerbaijan will become more independent from Moscow and will be able to turn further towards Turkey, reinforcing the Turkish-Azerbaijani scheme,” the expert wrote.

“In general, Armenia's distortion and the geopolitical consequence of immobilization sought by Baku under Ankara's leadership will strengthen the cohesion of the Turkish-centered Central Asian geosystem and its independence from external interference, further enhancing Turkey's role as an independent actor balancing between the West and the East, while blackmailing both. In other words, it will reinforce Turkey's bargaining subjects and role in the emerging international system. And for a stronger Turkey, it will be easier to pursue the ‘big trick’ it wants to achieve. That is, in the geopolitical inactivity of Greece and the Republic of Cyprus, Turkey will fear less the response of powerful actors and will have many more bargaining chips with which to negotiate with them.

This is why Greece's defense begins with Armenia. It is that simple. Greek diplomacy must find every means to support Armenia. This is because there are no isolated segments within a unified Eurasian system that are cut off from the rest. What happens in one area affects the others. And Turkey's and Azerbaijan's attack on Armenia makes Turkey more dangerous for Greece. This is evident.

Supporting Armenia is not merely solidarity with a nation with which we have many commonalities; it is a step necessary for Greece's security and geopolitical action within a unified and indivisible geosystem. Greek diplomacy and foreign policy, which in recent years has shown that it has freed itself from the provincialism syndrome that plagued it before, must take action. And, of course, Greece must act independently, without waiting for the remaining European countries that do not have issues similar to Turkey and its Central Asian allies,” Grivas emphasized.
