UN Ready to Assist Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan in Resolving Border Dispute
The United Nations is prepared to assist the authorities of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan in resolving their border dispute, should both parties request such support, stated the official spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, Stephane Dujarric.
“The UN is ready to support a sustainable resolution to border disputes if requested by the parties,” Dujarric said.
He noted that the Secretary-General is closely following the escalation of violence along the Kyrgyz-Tajik border with great concern.
“The Secretary-General calls on the leadership of the Kyrgyz Republic and the Republic of Tajikistan to initiate dialogue for a sustainable ceasefire. Both sides must fully utilize the mechanisms available on the ground to de-escalate tensions,” he added.
Widespread clashes erupted on the Kyrgyzstan-Tajikistan border on Friday morning, with both sides accusing each other of shelling. Fierce fighting between the military forces of both countries continued throughout the day along nearly the entire length of the border. A ceasefire was only reached at night.
The Kyrgyz side reported 24 casualties and more than 120 injuries due to the clashes. Fighting resumed on Saturday morning, with both sides accusing each other of violating the ceasefire agreement.
