Nancy Pelosi Makes a Statement in the National Assembly
The Speaker of the National Assembly, Alen Simonian, welcomed a delegation led by U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who arrived in Armenia on an official visit on September 18. Following the ceremonial reception, Simonian and Pelosi engaged in a private conversation. The two then participated in an expanded format discussion.
Simonian emphasized that the United States occupies a key position in Armenia's political and economic life.
“Dear friend, your visit to Armenia comes at a very challenging time for our country, and it is all the more appreciated in this regard. As you know, since September 13, Azerbaijan has initiated a new phase of aggression against Armenia’s sovereign territory. Azerbaijani armed forces have subjected not only the border positions of Armenia to brutal shelling but also numerous settlements and civilian infrastructure. Unfortunately, we have casualties,” noted Alen Simonian.
He expressed gratitude for the fragile ceasefire agreement reached with U.S. mediation on the evening of September 14, as well as appreciation for the U.S. authorities, including numerous congress members, for providing prompt evaluations of the recent developments.
The parties discussed issues related to the security of Armenia and the region, including details regarding the subsequent processes in the UN Security Council.
There was also a discussion about future interparliamentary cooperation projects. At the end of the meeting, the Speaker of the National Assembly of Armenia and the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives issued a statement.
Thanking the host for the reception, the Speaker of the House of Representatives stated, “When we visit any country, safety is important to us. We did not know that our visit would coincide with the days following military operations. We take pride in the U.S., surrounded by patriotic Armenians, who are also our citizens. They are our strength, an important component of our entirety,” said Nancy Pelosi.
After the meeting, Alen Simonian and Nancy Pelosi will address the media with a statement.
