Nancy Pelosi Visits Tsitsernakaberd Memorial

The Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, paid tribute to the victims of the Armenian Genocide at the Tsitsernakaberd memorial. According to Armenpress, Pelosi laid a wreath at the memorial and offered flowers at the eternal flame.

Pelosi, who arrived in Armenia on September 17, was accompanied by the President of the National Assembly of Armenia, Alen Simonyan. Members of the delegation also included the Chairman of the U.S. House Committee on Energy and Commerce, Frank Pallone, and House Representatives Anna Eshoo and Jackie Speier.

The United States has condemned the Armenian Genocide with resolutions dating back to 1916, 1919, and 1920. The U.S. House of Representatives passed resolutions recognizing and condemning the genocide in 1975, 1984, and 1996. Subsequently, resolutions were adopted by House committees in 2007 and 2010.

On October 29, 2019, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution reaffirming the U.S. position on the Armenian Genocide, and on December 12, 2019, the U.S. Senate adopted a resolution recognizing and condemning it. In a message to the Armenian people on April 24, 2021, President Joe Biden officially recognized the Armenian Genocide for the first time as a sitting U.S. president, using the term “genocide” in his speech.
