Grateful to the United States for Mediating the Fragile Ceasefire Agreement on September 14, Says Simonian
Our meeting with Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Ms. Pelosi, has just concluded, where we discussed regional issues and a wide range of bilateral cooperation. This was stated by the President of the National Assembly, Alen Simonian, during a joint press statement with Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
“Ms. Pelosi's visit to Armenia during this challenging time is extremely important for us, and we have always felt her support on the most difficult and sensitive issues,” noted Alen Simonian.
During the meeting, the Assembly President addressed the military aggression by Azerbaijan against the sovereign territory of Armenia on September 13. “I informed that the Azerbaijani armed forces have subjected not only Armenia's border positions but also numerous settlements and civilian infrastructures to brutal bombings, which have resulted in many human losses. It is clear that Azerbaijan's military-political leadership is taking advantage of the fact that the international community's attention is focused on what is happening in Ukraine.
We are grateful to the United States for its efforts, which facilitated the fragile ceasefire agreement reached on September 14. We also thank the U.S. authorities, especially numerous Congress members, for giving a timely assessment of Azerbaijan's military actions,” he added.
Simonian also presented the consistent progress achieved by the Republic of Armenia in strengthening democratic institutions and the rule of law since the Velvet Revolution of 2018 and the steps to be undertaken in this regard. He highlighted the development of Armenian-American inter-parliamentary relations and discussed prospects for expanding cooperation in this direction. In this context, he highly praised the activities of the Congressional Armenian Issues Caucus and its crucial role in strengthening bilateral ties.
The U.S. Congress has continuously proven to be a reliable partner and an important platform where many issues related to Armenia, Artsakh, and the Armenian people can be discussed in an atmosphere of mutual understanding and genuine friendship. We also discussed regional issues and other matters related to bilateral cooperation. Both sides emphasized the need to continue expanding a joint agenda aimed at democratic values,” Simonian stated.
