"A Ally Never Falls from the Sky, It Is Also a Resource That Must Be Built" - Edgar Elbakian
Political scientist Edgar Elbakian's remarks:
“ABOUT THE ALLY • Have you ever noticed how the idle people who roam the yard confidently ask neighbors coming and going for money for drinks? On one hand, there is helplessness, and on the other, the inflated self-esteem resulting from not doing anything and not engaging in social relations makes one think that they have some serious mission and that the surrounding world owes them a debt.
• Such is the perception of the collective political thought regarding the ally among many. Like people drinking on the street, many think that the ally is the one who does everything for you, and it is enough to find such a person, and all questions will be solved. If you tell these people that the USA is an ally of Taiwan, yet it has officially recognized it as part of China several times on paper, their worldview may collapse, or that at one point the same USA was selling heavy weapons to Israel’s enemies. They will generally be shocked to learn that Turkey in 1993 refused to provide Azerbaijan with 10-15 civilian helicopters to evacuate civilians from Karvachar, and so forth.
• Mature nations, especially their elites, know that an ally is also a resource that needs to be built. It never falls from the sky and is not a given quantity; moreover, an ally does not mean someone who lives in your place and gives you 'drink money' every day.
• This change in thinking can occur if we eliminate the two variables I mentioned above: helplessness and inflated self-esteem. Otherwise, the opposite is a new road towards 1915.”
