There Are Numerous Examples in the World Where Wars Have Broken Out After Peace Treaties—Pashinyan

Compromise and flexibility do not always lead to peace, and not everything that is proposed to be signed implies peace. This was stated by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan during a Q&A session in the National Assembly.

“Well, let’s suppose we recognize Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity, and Azerbaijan recognizes our territorial integrity—what about the region it recognizes, particularly the occupied areas of Sotk-Khoznavar? We say that by recognizing mutual territorial integrity, we proceed to the delimitation and demarcation process, and let’s say the peace treaty is signed—who guarantees that the same thing won’t happen again? We are in favor of a peace treaty, but without guarantees, it's just a piece of paper. This is also the reason we have been proposing for over a year to send an OSCE monitoring mission to the Armenian-Azerbaijani border to be able to find answers to these questions,” said Pashinyan.

He stated that Armenia desires peace, but under that peace, there needs to be a formula that ensures the peaceful coexistence of the peoples in the region. “There are numerous examples in the world where wars have broken out after peace treaties were signed; the most well-known example is the Ribbentrop-Molotov pact,” Pashinyan noted.
