Cheap Labor: Why Indians Are Coming to Armenia

According to the newspaper "Hayastani Zhoghovurd," despite the fact that the number of unemployed in Armenia exceeds 60,000, Indians have been considered cheap labor in our country for several years. In previous years, Indians were mainly involved in greenhouse work in Armenian villages. However, recently they have also started working in the construction sector. For instance, most Armenians refuse construction jobs, while Indians accept these jobs for 4,000 to 5,000 drams. They are accustomed to such work in their own country, while our compatriots simply do not prefer to carry out such tasks.

Moreover, Indians tend to view Armenia as a transit country, allowing them to move on to other nations, obtain visas, establish businesses, and work in various services. For example, many of them prefer to use Armenia to reach the United Arab Emirates. This means that they do not stay in Armenia for long.

The newspaper obtained information from the Statistical Committee of Armenia that in the first seven months of this year, 9,898 citizens of India arrived in Armenia, while 11,262 left. It is noteworthy that our compatriots are going to other countries, particularly Russia, where they are also engaged in construction work, while here, they have become indifferent. They do not want to work for the offered salary but complain about the lack of job opportunities.
