Will Russia Be Included in the U.S. List of State Sponsors of Terrorism?

The President of the United States has responded negatively to a question about whether Russia should be included in the American list of state sponsors of terrorism. His remarks were quoted on September 5 on Twitter by Jeff Mason, a reporter for Reuters, citing the White House.

In response to the question of whether it is necessary to classify Russia among the list of state sponsors of terrorism, Biden answered 'no,' the report stated. On July 27, the U.S. Senate passed a resolution calling on the State Department to recognize Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism. The document cites events in Chechnya, Georgia, Syria, and Ukraine as grounds for this designation.

Previously, Kyiv had appealed to Washington, urging it to include Russia on the list. On July 28, a group of bipartisan congress members announced their plans to introduce a similar document for discussion in the House of Representatives. States that have, in Washington's opinion, 'frequently provided support for acts of international terrorism' could be included in this list.

The U.S. administration has extensive authority to impose sanctions against figures on this list. The U.S. Department of the Treasury can take measures against legal and physical persons, as well as countries that trade with those listed. Currently, the list includes Iran, North Korea, Cuba, and Syria, as reported by TASS.
