Birth Rate in Armenia Declines Significantly

The newspaper "Zhoghovurd" reports that the number of births in Armenia has significantly decreased in the first seven months of this year. According to official sources, the number of newborns has fallen by 694 compared to last year. Specifically, in January-July 2020, the number of births was 19,435; in the same period of 2021, it increased to 20,164; however, this year it has decreased to 19,470.

Moreover, the number of stillbirths has also decreased, dropping from 283 to 257 over the course of a year. Another noteworthy trend is the increase in divorce rates in Armenia. The Statistical Committee of Armenia informed "Zhoghovurd" that in the first seven months of this year, there were 2,577 divorces, an increase of 138 cases compared to last year.

On the other hand, marriages have decreased: during January-July 2020, there were 6,436 marriages; in January-July 2021, the figure rose to 9,629, while in the same period this year, it reached 9,306. According to several experts, young people today prefer civil marriage options.
