German Foreign Minister's Response to Gorbachev's Death

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has commented on the role of former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev in her country's history on Twitter.

"Mikhail Gorbachev led during the fateful moments of our history, guided by the ideals of peace and understanding among people. The end of the Cold War and the reunification of Germany are his legacy. We mourn the passing of the statesman to whom we will be eternally grateful," wrote Baerbock.

The fall of the Berlin Wall, which had separated East Germany and West Berlin for 28 years, took place on November 9, 1989, against the backdrop of massive protests. The tearing down of the wall was one of the stages of Germany's reunification, which formally occurred on October 3, 1990. Unified Berlin became the capital of the country.

Mikhail Gorbachev passed away on August 30 at the age of 92.
