Biden on Gorbachev
The first and only president of the USSR, Mikhail Gorbachev, was a rare leader who had the courage to jeopardize his career to achieve 'another future.' This was stated by U.S. President Joe Biden, according to international news reports.
Speaking about 'glasnost' and 'perestroika,' he emphasized: 'These were acts of a rare leader: a man of imagination who saw the possibility of another future and had the courage to risk his entire career to get there. The result was a safer world and greater freedom for millions of people.'
He also described Gorbachev as an 'amazing visionary.' According to the Washington administration head, at that time 'only a few senior Soviet officials had the courage to admit that something needed to change.'
'As the leader of the USSR, he worked alongside President Reagan to reduce our countries' nuclear arsenals, easing life for people all around the world who were praying for an end to the nuclear arms race. After decades of brutal political oppression, he embraced democratic reforms,' the White House leader stated.
It is noteworthy that we previously reported that Mikhail Gorbachev passed away at the age of 92 on August 30.
