We Don't Want a New Chernobyl: Erdogan

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has stated that during a tripartite meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, they discussed possible ways to end the war in Ukraine. According to Anadolu, speaking in Lviv after the meeting, Erdogan mentioned that the parties discussed how to use the positive atmosphere created by the grain export agreement mediated by the UN to build sustainable peace.

“I personally continue to believe that the war will ultimately end at the negotiating table. In fact, Zelensky and Guterres agree on this matter. The whole question is to find the shortest and most just path to bring everyone to the negotiating table. I believe that negotiations can resume based on the criteria established in Istanbul in March. We are ready to once again act as a mediator, providing all possible support to achieve that goal,” he said.

Erdogan also expressed concern about the situation surrounding the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant. “We do not want a new Chernobyl,” he said.

He further noted that the issue of prisoner exchanges between Ukraine and Russia was discussed and that he would raise this issue in a later conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
