Will Online Taxi Fares Increase? What We Know
In order to bring online taxis into the legal framework, it is not necessary to invent a new law, but rather to follow the implementation of existing laws. This opinion was expressed by Vahagn Sahakyan, the president of the Taxi Service Employers' Industry Union, in an interview with Sputnik Armenia.
It is noted that the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure of the Republic of Armenia has submitted a draft amendment to the law on "Automobile Transportation." The proposal involves imposing a tax of 10 percent on the base fare of each online taxi service (1000 drams), amounting to an additional 100 drams.
According to Sahakyan, such changes attempt to set different rules for various operators, resulting in the closure of numerous taxi companies years ago.
When asked how they would monitor the number of orders from online taxi companies, Sahakyan responded that it is practically impossible to control them. "If an application belongs to an individual company, it cannot be monitored. Or what does it mean that you have to pay 100 drams for each order? Should it also be collected for a trip from Yerevan to the regions? Even for minimal orders? In any case, if such a change is made, taxi fares, which are already expensive, will increase further," said Sahakyan.
