Pashinyan Explained Why the Government Promotes Planting Only Wine Grape Varieties

During a government meeting, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan explained why the government is promoting the planting of only wine grape varieties. “Recently, when we have work discussions, it becomes evident that in many cases, the problems related to the harvesting season are connected to a significant imbalance in grape production. There is a large supply of brandy varieties, and compared to the supply, the demand is considerably low, while in the case of wine varieties, there is little supply, and demand is significantly high. Therefore, we have now decided to encourage the planting of only wine grape varieties through our planting program, which is very important and a promising direction,” he said.

Pashinyan also responded to the complaints of grape producers, emphasizing that there exists a market logic. “You see, every year, when the villagers say, ‘Oh, the price of grapes has dropped,’ I would like our beloved villagers to know the reason for this. That’s why I say there is a problem: when the yield is high, it’s a problem, when the yield is low, it’s a problem. Because when the yield is high, the supply is abundant, and the price, according to market logic, falls,” he noted, while also stating that by promoting the planting of only wine grape varieties, the government does not intend to underestimate brandy production.
