China Extends Military Exercises Around Taiwan
China’s People’s Liberation Army will continue military exercises in the air and maritime zones around Taiwan on Monday. This was reported by TASS, citing a statement from the Eastern Theater Command of the Chinese armed forces.
“On August 8, the Eastern Theater Command will continue joint military exercises in the air and maritime zones around Taiwan,” the statement reads.
According to the document, the organization of anti-ship defense and offensive operations at sea are being developed.
The Eastern Theater Command of the People’s Liberation Army has extended the duration of the exercises for the second consecutive day.
It is important to note that the Chinese armed forces began large-scale military exercises around Taiwan in six areas on August 4, also utilizing missiles. These exercises were scheduled to conclude on Sunday morning but were later extended.
The drills commenced a day after the visit of U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taipei, which sharply escalated tensions in the region and affected Sino-American relations.
