Lavrov Comments on Pelosi's Visit to Taiwan
The U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan aims to demonstrate America's impunity to the world, said Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, as reported by RIA Novosti.
"There is no doubt that this reflects precisely the line we are talking about in relation to the Ukrainian situation. This is a desire to showcase their impunity and randomness to everyone," Lavrov stated at a press conference following talks in Myanmar on August 3.
"Knowing very well the significance of this for the People's Republic of China, I see no other reason for creating such a provocative vacuum," he added.
Recall that on Tuesday evening, Nancy Pelosi's plane landed at Taipei Airport. China has declared that Pelosi's visit to Taiwan is a serious violation of China's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The day before, a spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Zhao Lijian, stated that Chinese authorities would take effective measures if Pelosi visited Taiwan. "If Pelosi visits Taiwan, it will be a gross interference in China's internal politics... and will lead to very serious consequences. The Chinese People's Liberation Army will not sit by idly," he emphasized in a press briefing.
According to the diplomat, Pelosi's visit would destabilize the situation in the Taiwan Strait and harm China-U.S. relations. China considers Taiwan its province and opposes any interaction between its representatives and officials of those countries with which Beijing has established diplomatic relations.
The issue of Taiwan has gained particular significance in U.S.-China relations against the backdrop of the situation in Ukraine. The PRC emphasizes that historical and political reasons make such comparisons inappropriate and demands non-interference in internal affairs. The U.S., while officially maintaining the "One China Principle" and lacking diplomatic relations with Taipei, not only maintains connections with the island but also regularly supplies arms there.
