Inquiry into Defendant in March 1 Case at Anti-Corruption Committee: What is Known from 'Zhoghvorud'

According to the 'Zhoghvorud' daily, the Armenian Anti-Corruption Committee is currently discussing the case of Gegham Petrosyan, a defendant in the March 1, 2008 case.

It has been reported that Gegham Petrosyan's lawyer, Vagarshak Gevorgyan, has submitted a request to the preliminary investigative body to have the criminal case against Petrosyan dismissed and for his acquittal.

As is known, on August 4, 2019, Gegham Petrosyan, a defendant in the March 1 case, was released from the ‘Yerevan Center’ penitentiary, known to many as the ‘KGB basement’. Nearly three years have passed since his release, but no investigative actions have taken place, and the criminal case remains in one of the drawers of the Anti-Corruption Committee.

It should be recalled that Gegham Petrosyan is accused of shooting and killing Zakhar Sargsyan on March 1, 2008. He has been charged under Article 104, Part 1 of the RA Criminal Code, which pertains to murder.

The preliminary investigative body had detained him because a testimony was provided against Petrosyan by police sub-lieutenant Alexander Azaryan, who claimed to have seen Petrosyan shoot at Zakhar Sargsyan.

Later, the results of an examination revealed that the types of weapon and the bullet found in the victim did not match, which led to Petrosyan's release.
