Spy Network Involves Mainly Former or Current Military Personnel, NSS Reports

The Investigative Department of the National Security Service of the Republic of Armenia has announced, taking into account the public interest in cases of state treason and espionage, that final judicial acts were formed in four criminal cases in July 2022, and the criminal proceedings against four individuals in custody have been transferred to the court with indictments.

According to the NSS, it has been established through the criminal proceedings that the anti-state activities of citizens of the Republic of Armenia involved in intelligence networks have allowed foreign intelligence services to gain precise information about the types, quantities, and possible tactics of the Armenian forces, including attack, defense, counter-battle strategies, tactical redeployments, and even obtaining geographical coordinates of Armenian forces through precise location on maps.

Foreign intelligence has mainly involved former or current military personnel in the espionage network, who, due to their service, had access to military units located in the Republics of Armenia and Artsakh, could ascend to combat positions, familiarize themselves with a variety of documents and information pertaining to the military sector, covertly conduct video recordings, record types and quantities of military equipment, the movement of units, take photos of military maps, acquire other information, and pass it on to foreign intelligence representatives in exchange for compensation.

The National Security Service of the Republic of Armenia reports that only in 2022, a total of 5 criminal cases regarding state treason have been submitted to the court by the investigators of the NSS's Investigative Department concerning 12 individuals.

Preliminary investigations are ongoing in other initiated proceedings, and considering the public interest in them, the National Security Service of the Republic of Armenia will periodically provide information about their progress and results.
