It Is Known Which Area of Yerevan Has the Most Polluted Air
It’s rare to find a week where the Hydro-Meteorological and Monitoring Center does not announce that in particular areas of the Center administrative district of Yerevan, the dust concentration exceeds permissible limits. Reports A1+.
Air pollution monitoring in the capital is conducted through 5 stationary observation stations and 42 mobile observation points. Although the stations have been inherited from the Soviet Union and partially modernized, they nonetheless indicate that something is not right with the air quality.
Last year, occurrences of air pollution surpassing acceptable levels were so frequent that the annual average index rose by about 1.2 times.
The most polluted air in Yerevan is near Arshakunyats Avenue, close to the Opera House. However, specialists emphasize that there are no observation points in many parts of the city.
According to Gayané Shahnazaryan, the deputy director of the Hydro-Meteorological and Monitoring Center, air pollution in Yerevan currently exceeds permissible levels by up to 4 times. This is still the case despite the absence of necessary equipment for monitoring small particulate matter, which are the most dangerous as they can penetrate the bloodstream.
