US and China Presidents to Discuss New Tensions Over Taiwan

US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping are scheduled to have a conversation on Thursday. This will be their first talk in four months, taking place amid new tensions surrounding Taiwan, as reported by Bloomberg citing an anonymous official source.

The planned discussions between the two leaders, the fifth in a series of regular meetings, have been in preparation for several weeks. However, the potential visit of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan has heightened the complexities in their relations, according to media reports.

Previously, the Chinese government warned that it would take "firm actions" if US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visits Taiwan. The Democratic Party leader's trip to Taiwan was postponed in April due to a positive COVID-19 test. Meanwhile, China has indicated that this visit would seriously impact Sino-American relations.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian stated that Pelosi's visit would "seriously undermine China's sovereignty and territorial integrity."
